As many as 10% of you complain about uneven skin texture being your number one concern on our Routine Finder quiz, but I’ve never done a video on it before — until now!
What is uneven skin texture?
An uneven skin texture can take many forms, including rough patches, flaking, clogged pores, pitted scars and raised scars — all of which can lend themselves to creating uneven textured skin. When the skin is textured, the surface is uneven and so the light doesn’t pop off of it in the way that it does if your skin is smooth. Because of this, many of you complain of a lack of radiance to the skin.
There are many reasons you might be experiencing rough skin. In today’s video, I talk you through them in detail and how you can treat uneven texture.
Common disorders that can cause uneven skin texture:
Dry skin disorders:
Conditions such as eczema and psoriasis (and the different forms that come in) can cause flaking, scaling and roughness due to lack of water.
Acne:
In its many forms, acne can cause rough texture, blemishes and scars giving a texture appearance to the skin.
Keratosis Pilaris:
Commonly affecting backs of arms but can also pop up on the cheeks, giving an uneven texture and sometimes redness.
Sun exposure:
Thickened, mottled and rough texture to the skin can be caused by sun exposure.
So, what can skincare do to help treat uneven skin texture?
Firstly, you should consider the simple act of exfoliation, my preference being chemical exfoliation. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like glycolic acid and lactic acid can deliver a smoother, brighter and more hydrated complexion. For acne-prone skin, I recommend using a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) in the form of salicylic acid, which delivers a smoothing result, whilst clearing clogged pores and acting as an anti-inflammatory.
You might also want to add a retinoid to your routine at night. They act to improve our skin’s own exfoliation mechanism by speeding up the skin renewal process. The result? Brighter cells underneath! And if you need retinoid advice, make sure to watch my Retinol Revelations series.
Don’t forget: broad-spectrum sunscreen everyday (SPF 50 or higher) is a given, especially when using active ingredients.
Flawless Neutralising Gel contains 2% salicylic acid with azelaic acid and bakuchiol to unclog pores, brighten dark marks and reduce inflammation.
With uneven skin texture — slow and steady wins the race!!
