How To LAYER Skincare Like A PRO! Demo + Tips

Everyone has unique skin needs - creating your own skincare 'cocktail' is the easiest route to giving you the results you are looking for. Properly applying and layering products means better, more noticeable results in the long run. If you have been using a product and not seeing the results you were hoping for, you could be applying it at the wrong time of day, or in the incorrect order.

My general recommendation is to apply your thinnest products first – any serums or liquid treatments

This way, they can be fully absorbed by the skin before any heavier creams are applied. Serums or liquids can be followed by treatment creams, which ought to be followed by a moisturiser.

AM

During the day, your beauty regime should focus on protecting your skin from harsh UV light and environmental aggressors, such as pollution. Naturally, sun protection should always be the final step in your skincare routine, even if you plan to wear foundation that contains an SP. I tend to focus on use of anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatory ingredients like salicylic acid and pigmentation treatments (such as azelaic acid) when I’m putting together a daytime routine.

PM

Your nightly skincare regimen should follow the same order as your daytime regime. There’s no need for sunscreen at night (obvs), but richer textured moisturiser might feel good, especially in cooler months. At night, your regimen should focus on repairing the skin and unclogging pores. Powerful anti-agers like retinoids should always be used at night.

Alternating + Buffering

On a practical level, there are times when you’ll want to be flexible and adapt your routine to a different climate. You might want to drop the frequency of your Actives or buffer them by applying them over moisturiser (rather then under) – my general attitude that it’s better to do little and often, then to stop and start repeatedly, so feel free to use these techniques to adapt your routine.

Ultimately, having a system and structure will deliver the best possible results for your skin.
