5 Skincare Hacks For Better Skin after Menopause

The menopause is a huge event in a woman’s life when it comes to skin.

It’s a scary number: 30%. Collagen. Gone. In only 5 years. And if you’ve been naughty with your sun behaviour, it will be magnified even further. It’s going to be more at risk of wrinkling, sagging, dehydrating and sensitivity. So there’s some work to be done to turn this around, ladies. The sooner you can pre-empt this situation, the better.

The skincare mantras of Menopause are:

  • Do No Harm

Dry skin is more prone to sensitivity – if you’ve been able to uses scrubs, brushes, astringents and foaming cleansers without consequence in your 30s and 40s, this might be the time to revisit those choices. It’ll also be that much harder to get meaningful levels of Actives going if you’re already using up your skin’s ‘irritation reserve’ in these non-impactful steps. I’ll talk more about this later.

  • Save Your Springs

Ah, precious Elastin. Our skin contains only a few percent of elastin compared to commonplace collagen – but its SO important. When you do that thing where you just pull your cheek back and say, “if I only I could just tighten it here…..” yep, you guessed it, that’s from knackered elastin. It’s like lycra that’s lost its ping.

  • Thickness is Paramount

Thick skin is crease-resistant and that means fewer wrinkles. Think how much easier it is to crush tissue paper, versus cardboard.

  • Amp up Antioxidants

Antioxidants are the skin’s ultimate back-up team – when UV and pollution sneak past your best efforts to prevent them affecting your skin, your antioxidants have got your back. But alas, this resource is not finite – and the levels diminish as you age and with chronic UV exposure over a lifetime. So it’s vital to support fresh supplies with both skincare and nutrition.

  • Be a Hydration Hero

We’ve touched on them all in the video but I’m thinking that maybe it’s worth doing a series on each of these topics, talking through the nuances of each point specifically for menopausal skin (as you’ve probably spotted that these are good general skincare behaviours I talk about already). Let me know if that would be helpful.
